Overview

Since 2014 a package of bilateral agreements has been in force between Russia and Argentina — on extradition, on legal assistance in criminal matters and on the transfer of sentenced persons. A formal channel therefore exists. Even so, Argentina remains one of the few destinations outside Europe with consistently strong judicial protection in extradition cases.

A request is examined by a federal court, with appeal available up to the Supreme Court. Arguments about politically motivated prosecution and risks under international conventions are examined on the merits rather than formally.

An additional factor is an accessible status procedure: an asylum application suspends extradition proceedings. A child born in the country gives parents grounds for citizenship, and Argentina surrenders its own nationals only with their consent.
